We had to go to Guntersville yesterday to drop off some paperwork but then had to wait a while to pick up some more, so we decided to spend a little time over by Lake Guntersville State Park.
Two miles before the park entrance there is a little parking area with a small trail and that looked like a good place to spend a few minutes.
There were so many dragonflies around. This one is most likely an Eastern
Amberwing.
Stunning little fellows.
Wood Duck house?
The pines are so tall! I heard birds tweeting up in the tops but have no idea what they were...
Grrrrrrr!!!
I have no idea what plant this is but I love the shape of the leaves.
I really need to get involved with the local birders soon, I've got a lot of learning to do!
Square bark, what texture!
And a place to sit for rest.
We will be taking a trip to the main park soon. I'm sure it will be spectacular!

Looks like a wonderful place
I am so impressed with the lay of the land there, so many places to hike and bike, as in peddle! I hope one day we can picnic there!
That is the good thing about relocating. So many new places and things to discover.
Looks like a great place to spend an hour or to or.....more! I could really get 'into' your dragons over there. Beautiful!
Looks like a great stop to me...Especially with seating available to absorb the views!
Gorgeous and lush! Nice place to relax while waiting on paperwork.
Those interesting shaped leaves look like baby Sycamore trees, but I'm not sure that's right.
Water and green, so soothing, aaahhh...
How lovely! It's amazing to me how different the flora is there: even somewhat familiar species, like a pine, looks different in another bioregion. Thanks for the photos--and the tour!
Such serene and beautiful shots! Catching that dragonfly one was great!! Have a nice week Eve!!
Looks like a great place to walk and see lots of stuff. I'm sure you will learn all the local flora and fauna soon...you have an inquiring mind :-)
Beautiful place to take in all the best nature has to offer-the lake, some feathery bird speak, the trees, the VIEW! I'd have a hard time staying away from there with a picnic lunch!!
Looks like a great place to visit Evie. That Dragon shot is brilliant.
The mystery leaves are not Sycamore. They're Sassafras. If you ever find some wild along a fence line or roadway right of way (not a public park), dig out a small root, clean off the outer bark and suck on it. That's the source of sarsaparilla... i.e., root beer. Something to amaze and mystify the kids with.
...those mitten-shaped leaves are Sassafras. We used to have it in the windbreak behind my old house. Such a lovely color in autumn too. My grandpa taught me about Sassafras when I was small. We did the same thing The Old Gray Egg mentions! :-) Love that tree!!
You've already been told about Sassafras so enjoy the scent of their roots as Old Grey Egg suggests! They are gorgeous when they don their autumn finery - something to look forward to! I can't wait to visit you, Eve. Soon! Soon!
Yep, as the Old Gray Egg and Kelly have mentioned- the mystery leaves are Sassafras- and the root does smell heavenly and makes a great tea.
Guntersville State Park is one of my favorite parks in Alabama- you'll love it there!
Great shot of the dragonfly- it looks like you caught it perfectly in flight!
Well dang, I thought I was going to be the smart one who could tell you what the tree is. But others beat me to it. :-) We have lots of Sassafras trees in our Tennessee woods.
I also love Guntersville State Park! When you check it out, I hope you'll get some photos of the Lodge. Haven't seen it since the renovation.
I love your site, you have a great gift.
Hope you had a fantastic 4th.
