Red Lake on Saturday....

A bunch of the North Country Bird Club members met Saturday for a trip to Red Lake near Theresa, NY for a wonderful annual walk to gather more birds for our May Count Lists. It's about a mile walk down a dirt road spotted with a few summer cabins and a boat launch at the end. The weather cooperated as it usually does for this one! It's always fun to spot an American Redstart or Red-eyed Vireo. It's always a great time and the flora is as beautiful as the fauna in all cases. The Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis) is one of my favorites and I have some here on my property as well. You've got to love a cooperative Garter Snake!!
Although we didn't see or hear a Pileated Woodpecker we saw plenty of evidence that they enjoy the area! A Least Sandpiper was doing a little dance for me after we saw a Bald Eagle fly over while two Common Loons were laughing below!

And nature always has something funny to say to us as we walk along the forest edge!

Good morning Eve. Love the birdie dance - Great capture of the snake's little evil forked tongue, too! lol

I like the way the mushrooms on the tree form a distorted face, it's comical.

Looking at the variety of images you posted, Red Lake looks like it would be a very interesting area to walk around. Really like the snake picture.

Ok, that tree that you said a pileated woodpecker had been at is more than a little scary. Methinks the woodpeckers around your parts are a bit larger than ours...that damage looks like it was done by something about the size of an ostrich!! lol
