Sad News....

This morning the male bluebird was in the tree outside my window. There was a commotion at the box. Tree swallows were looking in with no defence from dad. I checked...all 5 babies dead. No bugs in the nest. There is no sign of the mom. Something must have happened to her.
I'm very very sad.

Sad new indeed. The morning chorus was silent.

Bummer about the bluebirds, it's just mother nature doing what she does.

I am very sorry Eve, nature is very cruel at times.

That's awful. I know we're not supposed to anthropormphize at times like that, but it's just so damn hard not to feel a great loss. I'm putting my hopes with Stacey, though: maybe mom is okay and try another brood this summer.

Thank you all for your comments. I still haven't seen momma but there is always next year. Maybe my beautiful male will come back. I shouldn't get so attached! I'll be back to sunny side up tomorrow.

Eve - I saw your sad news on a blog that I visit regularly. Just wanted to say - sorry about your bluebirds. I've lost two different nests of birds this spring (none bluebirds) It's a hard pill to swallow. I love my bluebirds - they've fledged successfully this time - but I've lost them before. One positive is the bluebirds may nest at least two more times this summer. Hang in there.
