Elkhound and Porcupines....

Yesterday I woke up to 2 big brown blobs in one of my trees.
I thought I would try to redeem myself to Stacey and do a better job as a nature photographer so off I went with camera in tow....
And of course mister fat dog found them as well...he would have sat here all day looking up, because that's what elkhounds do...

Did you know porcupines scream at each other?????

And I want you all to know this sweet dog did not put them there and he came home with me, because he's met a porcupine before...has a very good memory....and no quills were displaced during or after the filming of this post!!!

Beautiful posts. you don't need to prove anything to me, you do a beautiful job :') We have an Australian Shep that HATES porkies!
But ours is too dumb to learn, He is a bear dog and I think he believes they are just sharp little bears.. Beautiful pictures I love their little faces.
and by the way, Yes they do scream and it can be quite scarry if you don't know what it is... especially durring mating season..

Thanks Stacey!
You're so sweet! We had an aussie mix...one of the best dogs ever!! We lost her at the end of the fall, she was 15 1/2 years old.
That is so funny "sharp little bears"!!! Well Ole would be a bear dog if we had any but I won't hope he gets the chance to find out! I have enough problems with rabbits!!! Ha Ha!!
Talk to you later!!

I have to say that your dog seemed very content just watching, then he learned his lesson the hard way. My Wheaten would have found her way to a nearby branch wanting to play.

Ha Ha he did learn the hard way Mike but it was pretty hard on him, yes! I Love the wheaten terrier...although I've never met one...what a cool dog.

Oh wow...porcupines...in your trees. Amazing. I saw a porcupine at the Audubon wildlife care center once...it was such a prehistoric looking creature. Glad your pup stayed away...those quills HURT!

Hi Eve, Thanks for your comments on the images from Italy. The process used to create these images does not involve true B&W conversion. You just select a brush, set the Blend Mode of the Brush Tool to Color, set the Foreground color to black and begin painting. As you paint, the color in the photo will be removed. The more detail you require the more patience is needed.

For B&W conversion I use a plugin from Fred Miranda "BW Workflow Pro". It was the best $30.00 I ever spent. His site has a great demo of the product. You can find it under his software tab.

Thanks Mike this plug-in sounds like worth looking at!

Great group of shots. I remember years ago seeing a porcupine up in a big pine tree. The branches were kinda thick so I couldn't get photos from the ground so I actually climbed the tree to get some pictures. Good thing I'm not afraid of heights.

Hi, Eve-
Ari and I LOVED this post--porcupines kind of freak her out (which is a good thing, I think), but they are awfully interesting to watch!

You asked about our town forest: it starts about a mile from our house, so we usually do walk there--especially now that gas is $20.00 a gallon!!

Cheers-
Kathryn
