These pictures are nothing to write home about but I wanted to share with you some photos I took last year at this time. We were blessed with a large number of Common Redpolls for the fall and winter. They are very funny looking birds which brought a smile to my face each and every day. They are extremely tame and I found my daughter spending a lot of time under the feeder coaxing them with treats.
I was so excited to have a Red-bellied Woodpecker even if it was just for a day. Today the weather is miserable to say the least. Our area is getting hammered by lake effect snow. I am a bit closer to the lake, and with the warmer temperatures from the water, we are getting a rain snow mix.
It's a good day to stay inside, keep warm and let Black Friday happen (as usual) without us!

I couldn't agree more about Black Friday.
Thanks for these absolutely wonderful pictures of the red polls. They are one of my favorite winter time birds--especially when they puff up their feathers against the cold and wind.
PS- How did the big meal go yesterday?
Hi Kathryn!
It was a tasty dinner! Sadly my husband is still in Georgia taking care of business but he was with his family too. We had a warm time at home and he'll be home tomorrow night...if he can make it through the wall of snow showers!! Pat all the critters for me!
So sweet to see your daughters feeding those red polls - didn't realize they were so tame! Cute! And can I tell you that everytime I see your blog header w/ that adorable Guinea face- I just have a big smile on my own face! :-)
I've never seen a Redpoll and think they are very pretty! How neat to hand feed them. Your daughter has great patience. I had a red-bellied eating in the driveway this morning! One of my favorite woodpeckers. I'm staying away from the stores. I mostly shop on-line....less stressful.
They are a winter visitor for us Evie, but you couldn't get close to them though unfortunately.
Love these pictures..esp of your daughter feeding the birds! Hope you are keeping warm and cozy. It's a great day to stay in...its crazy out there!
Lovely Redpoll piccys Evie. Unlike Roy in the east, in the west of England here, we do get them breeding in certain areas, but mostly see them in the winter. They're lovely little birds. I was going to ask what Black Friday was, and then got a clue from Marys reply! (-:
Oh yeah...we too are fully participating in "buy nothing day". :-) We're completely socked in the clouds up here, it's not raining like it was yesterday, but everything is wet and drippy and gray. My oldest leaves for a Carribbean cruise tomorrow, the lucky dog! :-)
Sounds like hot chocolate weather Eve. Your pictures are lovely.
We all get excited about the woodpeckers. Think the other birds are jealous?
This is totally cool! I didn't realize that they were some tame. I've only seen Common Redpolls once, it was Christmas Day, 2007. Thanks for posting this.
Wonderful pictures. Such a great shot of your little girl.. No black friday for me either.. YUCK
What beautiful little birds! I've never seen a red poll either. Love woodpeckers and get a special kick when the Pileated goes calling in our trees!
AWWW Eve they are sooooo sweet!! I hope I get the chance to feed them this winter, they are the cutest little birds! Thanks so much for posting the link to this entry, I really enjoyed it :)
