Only Morgan would come up with the idea to give a Mantis a marshmallow. She hung out with the mantis for a while and later told me it got a little wild. I told her you would too if you just ate a marshmallow as big as your head!
The following morning our new friend was still out in her new home catching bugs and looking very content.

Why, I never! Ever! Never have I seen anything like this, Eve. You and Morgan make a good team. Lucky mantis. And sweet little Daisy Lu enjoyed the encounter tremendously, and behaved herself admireably.
Eve I am speechless but grinning from ear to ear! That mantis is too much and Daisy's attention to Morgan and the marshmallow is sweet but hysterical. Your narration priceless! Pictures awesome!!

Just blog hopped to here. Great Praying Mantis pics! My girls love those things!! Found a huge mantis one time about 6-8 inches long on top of our goat barn... It was a little spooky! lol

Now there a theme for English class on, What I did this summer...hang with a mantis and feed it colored marshmallows! What a neat post, Eve! Who knew they would eat those sticky treats!! lol Enjoyed this a lot!

Such amazingly delicate fascinating creatures those mantis are. I think it's wonderful that your daughter is so in tune with nature, except perhaps for the dietary needs of insects. Nevertheless, it's good that she's tender and caring with them.
I also think it's sweet and funny that Daisy Lu was more interested in the marshmallow than the insect. Cute face.

Wow! Great sequence of photos! I am going to have to show my kids this post- and I am sure that they will be hunting for Praying Mantises as fast as they can after they see these photos. They are going to want to feed a mantis a marshmallow. "If you give a mantis a marshmallow. . . she's going to ask for a glass of milk." :)

My! What a large praying mantis!! I enjoyed them as a child and miss them as an adult. They have such a personality....but little did I know how much they liked marshmallows! Thanks for the insight!!
I know this post was from 4 years ago but if anyone is still monitoring...I fed a 1.25 inch praying mantis some leftover french toast which it devoured with gusto! I found it this morning and put it on my potted basil plant thinking it might be be able to catch some of the small flies that like to hang around. It stayed there for hours, perched, ready to to strike anything that came within its reach. So, feeling sorry for it, I gave it some water. Then looked around for some ants or something and came up with nothing. I had leftover french toast. It has protein, fat, carbs... I stuck a small piece on the end of a bamboo skewer and offered the morsel to it . It snagged it with its claws and started munching down. It kept eating until it was "full" then dropped the remaining amount and proceed to clean its claws and head. Cute. So let Morgan know...marshmallows and french toast. New food groups for praying mantises! LOL
