Getting to Know our Neighbors

As you know I was thrilled to find out our neighbors have Guinea Fowl and every time I drive up the road I have a smile on my face when I see those silly birds roaming the area. Morgan was also thrilled to find out that there was a girl close to her age, Alex, who rides the bus with her as well. They hit it off right away!
Friday evening we went up the road and Brenda and Mike, Alex's grandparent's, invited us over to have a stroll in their beautiful yard.
They have many guinea fowl that are paired up and laying eggs. Rather than leaving them to the wilds they got an incubator and have nearly 100 eggs warming to hatch! They have the biggest ducks I've ever seen, and this beautiful male Peacock struttin his stuff!!! Morgan and I were invited in the pen to get nice pictures. The oldest male was just spectacular, and this female, a beauty, but my heart still belongs to the guineas.

Oh and I won't forget Miss Prissy who no one can hold a candle too. She is just the sweetest Collie dog around!

Oh it is so nice to see Guinea fowl again, I miss the adventures of Buddy and his pals. Get the brooder ready, maybe a peacock or two this time. Love the eyes on Miss Prissy.

I'd love to have some Guineas, but have a bull headed bull dog. He chases squirrels and the deer (which bugs me) but has never caught anything so don't know if it's just the chase that he loves. He lives with cats, no problem. Question I'm getting to is do you think I could ever get him to leave the Guinea alone like the cats or is it a bad situation to put a Guinea in or are they able to hold their own with the dog?

What a beautiful collie with such a sweet face! How perfect for you to have neighbors with all of these lovely birds. 100 eggs? Hmmm...surely a couple might come to live at your house. Morgan, the guinea whisperer, can lure them home. Glad she found a friend so quickly!

Thanks Julie,
I knew you would love Prissy. She has such a sweet disposition. A lovely dog.

Hi Kerry,
I'm so glad you enjoy these posts!

Maria,
If I can train my Elkhound Ole to be good around these guys it can be done by any dog I'm sure. It just takes perseverance. I used some of the "dog whisperer’s" ideas. I had to make him lay down completely and let the guineas wander around him, and just really had to be a part of the daily training. He really wanted to eat them. The guineas are tough birds and they will hold their own once they are big...and they can fly. But I would say, yes, it can be done!

Wow! What great neighbors! I really like guineas as well- they make great "watchdogs" and eat lots of bugs.

Hi Evie, glad you got to meet the Guinea neighbours at last...and met a whole lot more by the looks of it. What a fab place! Did Miss Prissy get to meet Daisy Lou and Ole? Yes, I agree with Mary, some of those 100 eggs need to emigrate along the road when they've hatched! (-:

I see guinea fowl in your future....

What wonderful neighbours you have. And the people sound pretty nice too. ;o)

Isn't amazing what beauty nature will create in just one bird? Striking.

I have to say though, I fell pretty hard for Miss Prissy and her sweet eyes.

Lovely that you have such nice neighbors; nice neighbors with guineas, ducks, peacocks and a pretty collie? What more could one ask for? Are you going to be adopting any of their guineas when they hatch Eve?

My favorite childhood pet(s) were a pair of collie dogs. They had 13 puppies.

Glad you got to meet the guineas. The peacock photos are awesome.

Wow! I love this, Eve! What nice neighbors. Miss Prissy has the most beautiful face in the world. What a love. She looks like my mom's dog, Dakota, who she's going to have to find a home for. If you know anyone who would like a sheltie boy lemme know.
