A Woodland Walk in the Making

This past year I've started a little project in the woods. I'm creating a path that leads from my picnic table, through the woods and around to the swing. With a little inspiration I got from a new found Alabama garden blogger, Deborah, at Deb's Garden, I was even more motivated to get cracking on the job. Above I've already got cinder blocks awaiting a rustic bench topper.

I've lined the walkway with tree limbs and am raking off the leaves to promote moss growth.
I have plenty moss to transplant in hopes that it will fill in over time.

Deborah's blog is just full of great gardening information and when I mentioned to her that I was in the process of starting my woodland walk she quickly sent me her tips, having mastered the job with a lot of hard work and devotion. I'm sure she wont mind if I share them with anyone interested, here

I moved a few young Hellebores to the trail, my very first plants for the walk to come. They are still looking great after more than a week and the freezing temps we've had.

As I walked back up the path today my buddy the Red-bellied Woodpecker was busy at his favorite spot on the Dogwood. He loves to gather up sunflower seeds from the ground and fly them up to the tree where he pounds them until they open and are snackable!

He starts at the top...

...backs his way down...Ok you can't see him backing but I promise you he is behind the tree, backing...

 ...see I told you...

...down to a certain spot, then jumps to the ground.

He then grabs a seed and...

 ...flies up to his spot.

 Yes! I talking about you!
Hopefully in the years to come, I'll have a beautiful woodland trail that will brighten even the shadiest of forests!
Thanks Deb!!

What a wonderful idea. A bit of YOU in the woods. I like that. Think I will make a path and put a table with chairs at the end of it.
I love the idea of it.

Its going to look great when you finished it Evie. Then you will be able to walk around it and get more great shots like the woodpecker.

I loved this post. Oh, and the new header photo is absolutely adorable! What a lucky shot.

I tried for several years to cultivate a birding and shade garden in the backyard. It was not going quite as I had planned with the plants, but got even worse once THE DOG came to live with us. Now I'm trying to decide how to rework the whole thing. There's just too much to do! At least the birds don't mind the dog.

I did miss it Evie, but noticed it after I had posted the comment so I was saving it for next time.{:)

Thanks Kari! Hopefully it wont be too long of a wait!

Thanks Bunnits! I've had to set up little barriers before to keep the dogs out of the gardens, after they learned to go around I took them down. Now I just say..."GET OUT" and they listen!! hahahaha!

I knew you'd see it Roy...but I guess I'll have to get busy and post another post!! :-)

I love that new header! Wonderful! I so seldom see a Bluebird at my house. I like your woodpecker, too. It is so funny to watch the way they back down the tree....it always makes me want to say, "use your wings and fly!" Sometimes the nuthatch will be coming down head first and the woodpecker going up head first...birds are so amazing to watch and so entertaining.

Hi Eve, I love your woodland path! Already it looks like a very inviting walk. Eating at the picnic table must be a real treat. I really enjoyed your shots of the red-bellied woodpecker. Seeing sights like that is what makes a woodland path so special. Thanks so much for mentioning me and my blog. I am flattered!

You will, dear. Of this I have no doubts. And you'll have some good help and great company with this sweet friend, here.

Interesting project Eve. I like the idea of a moss-lined walkway bordered by Hellebores (one of my favourites)... I have plenty of seedlings .. if only we were closer! FAB.

That sounds like a fabulous idea! I learned something, too - I didn't know that piled leaves promote moss growth. Cool.

BTW, your banner photo is awesome.

Can't wait to see how your woodland walk progresses. I was inspired by Deb's Garden, as well! Too hot here in the summer to have moss in Texas. Whenever I see moss here, I think "drainage problem." I tried to grow it one time on some concrete -- mixed the moss with buttermilk and painted it on concrete. It was July. It fried.
