The Subdued Rumble Begins!

Now if you recall we had a nice February thaw (poor Mr. Snowman) and on the 19th, obviously after that young lady turkey and her friend spread the word) a whole gaggle....ummmm "rafter" of turkeys showed up in the yard. There was another rafter across the road but maybe they'd already met the Guinea kids and had, shall we say, an understanding. It took a little while but this bunch of about 20, each of which was no less than twice the size of my kids, to make it around back. Here they meet, guineas to the right, turkeys to the left. Now I'm not quite sure what it is that makes guineas look formidable to these big gobblers... ...I even think the turkeys were wondering the same thing. Maybe it was the noise alone that turned them away, but to tell you the truth the kids weren't all that loud...just persistent. We'll just follow them to make sure they get the message. Looks like we've made ourselves semi loud and clear.Well, let's just check to make sure. Very good then! Those silly birds!

Pretty cool behavior. I can't believe the turkeys were chickens. Glad there was no fight, only intimidation. Great posts!

Eve,
That is too funny! Looks like you have Guard Guineas! That's a lot of turkeys too!

Pretty soon you'll have to put up a 'Turkey X-ing' sign ; )

I see most of your snow is gone. Lucky you. We still have plenty of it. No grass here yet.

Guineas don't take no guff. I think that they know that if you want to soar with the eagles, you can't be hanging around with a bunch of turkeys.

That is hilarious! Your guineas are just not putting up with any interlopers.

All very dignified. They're impressive guard guineas. I think you need to find a way to take them south with you Evie.....seriously!

That was fun. I am afraid I don't know what kind of noise guineas make. Not gobble gobble I guess. (o:

Barb, thanks for the nice compliment on my header. That is Morgan on the left, her friend in the middle and yes, Daisy Lu there on the right.

Hey Evie,
So it was settled by extensive negotiations, with no shots fired and no collateral damage caused. {:)

Those photos are awesome. I have only ever seen wild turkeys once in my life and that's been a few years ago and they were far away in a field. Never seen this many in one spot before. Wonderful post.

I can't imagine how cool it would be to have a flock of GIANT, wild turkeys suddenly show up on our property. Fascinating birds. Big chickens, but fascinating, nonetheless. :-)
Guineas - 1, Turkeys - 0

I have always heard guineas are better than guard dogs.
