When I look out at my feeder
and there's no finch in sight,
I know the masked
bandit is near.
He sits high in a tree
so farther to see,
filling his neighbors with fear.
For he is no robin,
no lark,
no dove,
He'll swoop down and catch you in flight.
So if you are small
you best be on the ball
or you might be dinner tonight.

Eve, thanks for directing me to your site. I LOVE this poem! It's so true (and funny!). Your words say it all about him! You've got a great talent!
Thanks again! I'm now a Shrike fan! Is that a bad thing?
Fab poem and FAB U LOUS photo too Evie! Over here it's called Great Grey Shrike or a common name for it is butcher bird. Smart looking I think.
Love the poem and that's a terrific photo too.
Love the poem! Very well expressed! The photo is beautiful...so stark against that background and very lovely. Hard to believe that is a preditor bird.

I just love your poetry Eve, and this is a great photo of a beautiful little bird, even if has a reputation.
This is a great image of a Northern Shrike. Just the righ amount of snow to add to atmosphere to the photo. Love it.

What a wonderful picture...balancing on the end of that little branch! He looks so innocent and sweet..hard to believe that he feeds on smaller birds and what a GREAT poem you wrote!
