These crab apple trees were given to me by a someone who said..."here...they have pretty flowers". I never knew what they were because for 12 years rabbits and deer would eat them down and they would have to start again each spring. Finally, a few years ago they were able to survive and on the old growth there were a few flowers.

Finally, a few years ago they were able to survive and on the old growth there were a few flowers. I had no idea they were trying so hard to be crab apple trees. I now have crab apple bushes! 
They are loaded with beautiful flowers in the spring, crab apples in the summer, and the brightest fall color in the yard.

Really beautiful! Does anything eat your crab apples? I never see anything in my trees, but they do have lovely color both spring and fall. The pink crabs around here seem to look stressed and unhealthy.....mine looks bad all summer. My white crab looks great.

Are your crab apples the same as ornamental crab apple trees? They're really pretty.
I LOVE your new banner!! Sadly, clay-colored sparrows weren't migrating through at the time of my workshop and we didn't see any. It would be a lifer for me.
Hi Evie, back to normal again, I too love your new header, such a lovely clean looking sparrow. Great crab apple pics too, like someone else whose posted a comment, I too would like to know if anything comes along to eat them during the winter.
Hi Guys! Thanks to you all. Mary and Jenny, yes, the deer clear off all they can reach, so it looks really funny out there come late winter, there are apples from about 6' or so up. Then more toward the spring the birds come and get the rest. I'll have to pay attention to the birds that take them, but I think I remember seeing Blue Jays into them last year.
Barb, you made me laugh!! I did a horrible job at taking care of them for so many years. I don't show a full picture of them because instead of 1 trunk like a real tree they have about 4 trunks each!! But maybe that's why they are so full of apples now! They really do stand out in the yard!

You know, I'm still wondering where the spring went. It's a good thing we have the apples to remind us it's fall.

Beautiful crab apple tree - can you eat those? How are you keeping the deer from them now?
Thanks Danni! Sure you can eat one but your mouth would probably pucker closed so you wouldn't be able to eat another!! Ha Ha! Now that the trunks are big enough the rabbits and deer don't eat them at the base so they are pretty safe from them. So I don't wrap them any more.
PS is there some kind of tasty recipe for crabapples??? If anyone would know it would probably be you!!!
Ha! Thanks for the vote of confidence. :-) Funny enough, just a quick Google query gave me recipes for: spiced crabapples, crabapple butter, crabapple jelly (apparently the natural pectin content is so high in crabapples, you don't need to add any), and crabapple cider! Get to work, Eve!! :-)
